Couples, Wiesberger, Piercy and Park all win

Fred Couples, Bernd Wiesberger, Scotrt Piercy and Inbee Park all claimed victories in a busy weekend of world class golf.

American Couples birdied the final two holes at Turnberry to win the Senior British Open by two shots from compatriot Gary Hallberg as overnight leader Bernhard Langer struggled to a 75 after being put on the clock.

“It was obviously a very fun day,” said Couples, who shot a closing 67 to finish -9. “But being paired with Bernhard, you’ve got to play great and for a long time there, we were neck and neck, and obviously Gary Hallberg made a very nice, strong finish.

“I drove it well. I did drive it in a couple of pot bunkers and made bogeys. But I made just enough putts and hit a couple of really nice shots on 15, 16, 17, 18, pretty much right where I needed to go.

“And you know, that was a big birdie on 17 to make 18 play easier and then when I hit the you putt, the hole got in the way to win by two.

“But I’m very happy and excited to have won this. And on the green, first thing I asked Bernhard, ‘I really don’t know, do I get to play in The Open next year?’ And he goes, ‘Yeah, you do.’ To play one more Open is really, really special, too.”

The best placed Brits were Barry Lane and Carl Mason, who tied for fourth on -4.

Bernd Wiesberger was a popular home winner of the Austrian Open. A fabulous closing 65 clinched a three-stroke victory from Thomas Levet and Shane Lowry.

It’s the 26 year old’s second European Tour win of the year and lifts him to 19th in the Race to Dubai and 78th in the world rankings.

On the PGA Tour, Scott Piercy capped off a great run of form with victory at the RBC Canadian Open. The American followed an opening course record 62 with three 67s for a hugely impressive triumph.

Englishmen Gary Christian and Brian Davis finished T10 and T15 respectively, but new Open champion Ernie Els missed the cut.

The other big winner in a fantastic and frenetic weekend of golf was Inbee Park in the Evian Masters on the LPGA Tour.

The Korean fired a 66 in France to claim her first LPGA title since winning the 2008 US Women’s Open.
