Fantasy Golf: AT&T National Preview

The Today’s Golfer Fantasy Golf game, in association with Your Golf Travel, continues on the PGA Tour this week with the AT&T National at Congressional.

The tournament returns to last year’s US Open host venue after a two-year stint at Aronimink while Congressional was preparing to stage Rory McIlroy’s triumph.

The par-71 layout is a lengthy 7,569 yards off the tee so distance is important, but it will be wasted without accuracy.

Last time the AT&T National was played here in 2009 the greens were poa annua but this has since been replaced with bentgrass, which doesn’t have as much grain.

The weather has been drier than in the lead up to last year’s US Open so the course will play a lot firmer and faster, and scoring will be much tougher.

Here is TG’s six-man team for the AT&T National:

Tiger Woods, $4.5m
The former world number one was the AT&T National the last time it was played at Congressional, in 2009. Two wins this season and steadily improving form show signs that he’s not too far off his dominant best. He’s 2nd on Tour in total driving and greens in regulation.

KJ Choi, $3.0m
The relaible Korean has had a quiet season but T13-T19-T15 finishes in his last three starts show signs of life. He won here in 2007. He’s 6th on Tour in final round scoring average.

Hunter Mahan, $2.8m
The third place man in the FedEx Cup has been quiet of late after two wins early this year, but he fired a career-low 61 in the final round to finish T11 at last week’s Travelers Championship. He has a very good record at Congressional; T8 in 2007, T12 in 2008 and 2nd in 2009.

Jim Furyk, $2.4m
The 54-hole joint leader at the US Open will be disappointed not to have won a second Major but it did continue his great form, with six top 11s in his last nine starts. Three top 10s in as many starts at Congressional in this event and ranks 22nd on the PGA Tour in greens in regulation.

Ryan Palmer, $1.3m
He’s the form man on the PGA Tour thanks to four top 10s in his last five starts, including T3 in his last start at the FedEx St Jude Classic. He finished T21 in the 2011 US Open at Congressional.

Brian Davis, $1.0m
The Englishman finished T4 after holding the 54-hole lead at last week’s Travelers Championship; his third T4 of the year. He sits 6th on Tour in driving accuracy and 9th in three-putt avoidance.
