Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald and Lee Westwood will play together today in the opening round of the World Golf Championship at Doral, Florida.

The three British  golfers have been scrapping for the World No1 spot over the last few months and it’s McIlory who now holds that position after winning The Honda Classic last week.

McIlroy said: “I am just going to concentrate on playing good golf, try to win tournaments. If I can do that, then the position I am in will hopefully take care of itself.”

The Masters is only a few weeks away and all three players are in decent form. The opening two rounds will be an intriguing contest as the world’s top three players prepare for the opening Major of 2012.

But it is undoubtedly McIlroy who is the man of the moment with just one finish outside the top five since the PHA championship in August.

Even Donald is impressed with 22-year-old from Northern Ireland. Donald said: “Rory is playing extremely well and he’s the guy with the most confidence right now.”

The fearsome threesome tee off at 4.50pm UK time today and at 5.50pm UK time tomorrow.

There are plenty of other big names hoping to make a mark in the World Golf event and Tiger Woods looks ready to do something special. He will be playing alongside Nick Watney and a resurgent Sergio Garcia.
