Fantasy Golf: HP Byron Nelson Championship preview

The Today’s Golfer Fantasy Golf game, in association with Your Golf Travel, stays on the PGA Tour this week for the HP Byron Nelson Championship in Texas.

TPC Four Seasons is hosting the tournament for the 27th year. From 1994-2007 it shared the pre-cut duties with Cottonwood Valley GC, but it’s stood alone since 2008.

It’s a 7,166-yard, par 70 layout that ranked as the third most difficult par 70 in non-Majors on the PGA Tour last season. Wind is often a factor and early forecasts are predicting constant 12-16mph winds throughout the week.

The stats from recent years indicate making birdies and scrambling for par is very difficult so good putters will likely benefit. Experienced veterans have done well in the past but the last two winners – Jason Day and Keegan Bradley – have won in their first appearances.

Here is the six-man Today’s Golfer team for the HP Byron Nelson Championship:

Adam Scott, $3.4m
The 2008 winner has finished inside the top 15 in his last nine strokeplay events and finished T15 at Sawgrass. If he’d played enough rounds to qualify, he’d rank fifth on the PGA Tour in greens in regulation and first in birdies or better on par 4s.

Jason Day, $3.2m
Another Australian who’s comfortable in the wind. His two starts at TPC Four Seasons have yielded a win and fifth-place finish.

Matt Kuchar, $3.0m
Last week’s Players Champion has incredible consistency so you wouldn’t bet against him going back-to-back. Finished T6 here last year and sits eighth in scrambling and fourth in bogey avoidance on Tour.

Keegan Bradley, $2.4m
The defending champion missed two curs prior to his T35 showing at Sawgrass, but he’d racked up 12 top 20s in 14 starts before that.

Jeff Overton, $1.3m
He has a great record here with T2 and T8 finishes the last two years. He’s 24th on Tour in birdie average, 35th in birdies or better on par 4s and 32nd in bogey avoidance.

Carl Pettersson, $1.3m
The big Swede’s great form this season has thrust him into the world’s top 50 and he continued this with a top 10 at the Players last week. He’s a good ball striker and currently 12th on Tour in Strokes Gained-Putting.
