wentworth day one

Perfect conditions saw some impressive scores on the opening day of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Ernie Els set an impressive early score, negotiating a course he has helped re-shape in recent years in 68 to finish at four under. But it was Irishman Peter Lawrie and Scotsman David Drysdale who top the leaderboard with a stunning six under.

Lawrie opened with a staggering 30 shots on the front nine as he bagged three birdies and an eagle at the fourth. Drysdale had four birdies on the front nine and another three on the back. Just one bogey – on the 13th – spoilt an otherwise fantastic display of golf.

There are some big names on the leaderboard though with Justin Rose at five under and Lee Westwood and Luke Donald both on two under.

Rory McIlory struggled and could only post a 74, two-over par. Conditions are expected to be similar tomorrow (Friday) and things are set to stay pretty decent all over the weekend.
