Fantasy Golf: Perth International preview

The cancellation of the Andalucia Masters means the Today’s Golfer Fantasy Golf game, in association with Your Golf Travel, is focused on the European Tour’s Perth International this week.

The Australian event is a new addition to the European Tour and takes place at the 7,143-yard Lake Karrinyup CC layout.

The course may be short but its tree-lined fairways and relatively small greens should help limit the scoring. There are four lakes on the property but water only really comes into play on the third hole.

Positioning the ball off the tee to attack the flags will be important so favour accuracy and good ball-striking. The effects of travelling all the way to Australia and local experience should also be considered.

There are a lot of local players in the field so managers have a relatively small pool of eligible players to pick from.

Here is TG’s six-man team for the Perth International:

Charl Schwartzel, $3.2m
The South African is one of only three world top 50 players in the field. He’s 11th on the European Tour in greens in regulation. He hasn’t missed a cut in eight starts since The Open, but he’s only recorded one top 20 in that run.

Bo Van Pelt, $2.2m
The American finished the FedEx Cup play-offs with back-to-back 10th place finishes. He’s 4th on the PGA Tour for total driving, 7th in birdie average and 11th in stroke gained – putting so has all the attributes to go low here.

Jason Dufner, $1.9m
The world number 10 is the top-ranked player in the field. He recorded two wins and six more top 10s in a breakout 2012 season. He’s 3rd on the PGA Tour in the all-around ranking.

Greg Chalmers, $1.6m
The Aussie won two tournaments on home soil around this time last year. He enters off the back of encouraging 9-T39-T16 finishes in the first three FedEx Cup events and is a great putter.

Brett Rumford, $0.7m
Another Aussie who should be comfortable in familiar surroundings. Putting is his real strength and the relatively short course should negate his lack of length. Has finished top 22 in three of his last four starts.

Scott Jamieson, $0.7m
The Scot is regaining his form after a poor summer by his standards. He has two top-eights in his last seven starts and finished and was T12 in last week’s Portugal Masters.
