New British Development Tour Enjoys Successful Launch Event

Published:

The Players Tour, a new British Development Tour for up-and-coming professional golfers and elite amateurs, hosted its inaugural launch event at the European Tour venue, the London Golf Club, on Wednesday the 10th of October.

The new tour, that will kickstart in 2013, aims to become the biggest British one-day golf tour, offering players the chance to compete for thousands of pounds without the expenses of travel and overnight accomodation.

The tour will stop off at world class venues including Woburn, Woodhall Spa, Celtic Manor, Prince’s and The Oxfordshire. It is also endorsed by major golfing brands such as Motocaddy, Never Compromise, Nikon and IJP Design, who will put up prizes at events and for the Order Of Merit winners.

The top-three in the Order Of Merit, as of the 23rd of May, will also receive free entry to Open qualifying, as willl the top-three, as of the 24th of August, to the European Tour’s Qualifying School.

Furthermore, a £15,000 Professional Matchplay Championship, will be held at Woburn in October, with the winner taking home £9,000 and an IJP Design professional clothing contract. With a maximum of only 128 spaces available, the early rounds will be split into regions, with the final four players qualifying for the all expenses paid trip to Woburn, where they will compete over 2 days for the £15,000 finalists Prize Fund and IJP contract.

The 2012 launch event of the Players Tour was won by Hastings professional Colton Alleyne-Davis, whose three-under-par 69 was good enough to hold off a strong field including European Tour, EuroPro Tour and Jamega Tour players. Playing over the 7,000-yard International Course – set up to mirror Open Qualifying held there earlier in the year – the players knew they would have to be at their very best to stand a chance of taking the launch event title and its £1,300 first prize.

There were some very solid rounds from James Doswell (70) and Max Brackley (71) who came in at 2nd and 3rd respectively, but it was 22-year-old Alleyne-Davis (pictured) on his professional debut, who shot the lowest score of the day.
