Fantasy Golf: Tour Championship preview

The Today’s Golfer Fantasy Golf game, in association with Your Golf Travel, visits the PGA Tour for the final time this week as the FedEx Cup Play-offs reach their climax at the double-weighted Tour Championship.

The top 30 players in the FedEx Cup assemble at East Lake this week with an extra $10 million (£6.2 million) for topping the standings on the line.

The 7,319-yard par-70 layout has hosted the season finale for the last nine years, six of which have been since the inception of the FedEx Cup.

It’s a good test and none of the last four winners since Bermuda grass was installed on the greens have finished double digits under par.

Players will need to be accurate but the most important area is likely to be putting. The greens will run at over 12 on the Stimpmeter and with such a small field, performance on the greens will make a huge difference.

The 18th is a par 3 and the closing stretch is very difficult so it could all boil down to who can handle the immense pressure and hole a few putts over the weekend.

Here is TG’s six-man team for the Tour Championship:

Tiger Woods, $4.0m
He’s ranked second in the FedEx Cup so a victory would seal the whole thing. He won at East Lake in 2007 and has four runners-up finishes here. Ranks sixth in total driving and 26th in strokes gained – putting.

Phil Mickelson, $3.6m
After a quiet few months, the only two-time champion at East Lake has regained his form in the play-offs with the adoption of a claw putting grip. His last two starts have yielded T4 and T2 finishes.

Jim Furyk, $2.4m
He won here in 2010 to clinch the FedEx Cup but didn’t make it last year. He led the field in strokes gained – putting at the BMW Championship on the way to finishing ninth and sits fourth on Tour in adjusted scoring.

Jason Dufner, $1.9m
The Ryder Cup debutant is a great fit for East Lake, ranking 16th in fairways hit, fourth in GIR, 64th in strokes gained – putting and fourth in par breakers.

Brandt Snedeker, $1.9m
He’s fifth in the FedEx Cup so knows a win will earn the $10 million. His play-off record this year reads 2-6-T37 and he leads the Tour in strokes gained – putting.

John Huh, $0.5m
Huh offers great value in a small field with so many expensive players. He’s the only rookie to make it this far. Ranks eighth in fairways hit, 52nd in greens and 56th in strokes gained – putting.
