Fantasy Golf: The Barclays preview

The Today’s Golfer Fantasy Golf game this week is the first event of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs, The Barclays at Liberty National GC in Jersey City, New Jersey.

The top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings have qualified for this week and 22 of the top 25 in the world rankings are teeing it up. The top 100 in the FedEx Cup after this week will advance to next week’s Deutsche Bank Championship.

Liberty National is only seven years old and hosts the PGA Tour for the second time after The Barclays in 2009.

It was the hardest par 71 layout on the PGA Tour in 2009 but it has been slightly shortened to 7,353 yards this year. Fairways have been widened but there’s deep rough if you miss them and very undulating greens make for difficult scoring.

Here is TG’s six-man team for The Barclays:

Tiger Woods, £5.5m
It’s another year without a Major for Tiger but he comes into this week with five wins this season and at the top of the FedEx Cup standings. He finished tied-second here in 2009.

Adam Scott, £3.8m
A T5 in his last start at the US PGA Championship gave Scott the best cumulative score in the four Majors this year. He’s finished inside the top 20 in eight of his 11 strokeplay events this year, including four top 5s.

Jim Furyk, £2.2m
The 2010 FedEx Cup champion has come into form at a good time again with T9-T9-2 finishes in his last three starts. He finished T15 here in 2009.

Henrik Stenson, £1.8m
Stenson is the most in-form golfer on the planet at the moment without a win, having recorded two runners-up and two thirds in his last four starts. He’s sixth on the PGA Tour for fairways hit and second for greens in regulation.

Rory Sabbatini, £1.0m
The South African has three top 10s and a pair of top 20s in his last six tournaments. He ranks 18th in greens in regulation on the PGA Tour.

Matt Jones, £0.5m
Jones has risen over 170 places in the world rankings in the last three months thanks to four top 10s in seven PGA Tour events. He sits seventh in the all-around ranking and ninth in scrambling.
