Fantasy Golf: Wyndham Championship preview

The Today’s Golfer Fantasy Golf game is staying in America this week for the final PGA Tour regular season event – the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield CC, Greensboro, North Carolina.

The top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings after this week advance to the play-offs so there’s plenty to play for and nine of the world’s top 36 players have made the trip from the US PGA Championship.

Like Oak Hill, Sedgefield is a Donald Ross design but it will play much easier – in its five years as venue, the course has always ranked as one of the two easiest par 70s on the schedule.

There will be plenty of birdies on offer for the field but the players will need to hit the fairway to set up these opportunities and past results have favoured strong ball-strikers and putters.

Here is TG’s six-man team for the Wyndham Championship:

Brandt Snedeker, £4.0m
The world number seven hasn’t broken par in his last eight rounds since winning in Canada, but he’s made four of five cuts at Sedgefield with a T5 in 2009 and a T8 in 2010. He’s 10th on the PGA Tour in in strokes gained – putting.

Sergio Garcia, £3.0m
Garcia’s win here last year started a run of 23 cuts made in 24 tournaments(WD, Bay Hill) that includes another win and nine other top 10s worldwide. He also finished fourth here in 2009 and leads the Tour in strokes gained – putting.

Webb Simpson, £2.8m
The 2011 Wyndham champ also finished T8 in 2010 and T22 last year. He has a T5 and T14 in his last five starts and shot a second round 64 on the way to T25 at Oak Hill last week.

Zach Johnson, £2.2m
Johnson is the form man in the field with finishes of T2-T6-T4-T8 in his last four tournaments. He’s 12th on the PGA Tour for driving accuracy and 60th in strokes gained – putting.

Bill Haas, £2.1m
Haas continues to lead the PGA Tour with nine top-10 finishes and recorded a solid T25 at Oak Hill. He’s made three of five cuts at Sedgefield with a T10 in 2009 and a T7 in 2012 and ranks 12th on Tour in GIR.

Roberto Castro, £0.6m
A creditable T12 finish at the US PGA Championship was his third top-15 in his last five starts. He ranks 33rd in greens in regulation and 26th in scrambling.
