The Solheim Cup teams are announced

Former world number one Laura Davies will not feature in Europe’s Solheim Cup team for the first time after missing out on a wildcard pick.

The 49-year-old is the highest points scorer in the event’s history, after playing in all 12 previous events.

Davies tweeted: “Oh well, no pick from the captain. Didn’t really deserve one. Mind you still a bit disappointed.”

England’s Charley Hull, 17, was picked for the match against America at Colorado Golf Club from 16-18 August.

The teams were announced and revealed after the completion of the Ricoh Women’s British Open at St Andrews, won by America’s Stacy Lewis, who makes her team.

But it was the end of the Solheim Cup playing road for Davies, who has won four majors, and who made her Cup debut in the inaugural competition at Lake Nona in 1990.

She was not selected by captain Liselotte Neumann after missing the cut at St Andrews.

In her last appearance, at Ireland’s Killeen Castle in 2011, she became the highest points scorer in the competition’s history, her total of 25 passing Annika Sorenstam’s old record of 24.

“I think she (Davies) is disappointed, but she was very good when I spoke to her on the phone,” Neumann said.

“She said I wish you all the best of luck, go out to Colorado and get it done.”

Hull the Woburn rookie turned professional this year and finished runner-up in her first five events on the Ladies European Tour. Hull was also part of Europe’s Junior Solheim Cup team that was captained by Neumann in Ireland two years ago.

“I find Charley energetic, fearless and I think she’s just a great competitor and a great addition to the team,” said Neumann, who believes her mix of youth and experience can help Europe win on American soil for the first time. “We’ve never won over there and it’s a big challenge but I feel that this is really the team that’s going to do it for us.”

As well as Hull, Neumann’s other captain’s picks were Caroline Hedwall of Sweden, England’s Jodi Ewart-Shadoff and Italy’s Gialia Sergas. The total number of rookies in the team will be six and, in addition to Hull, Ewart-Shadoff and Sergas, that number also includes Caroline Masson from Germany and the Spanish duo Carlota Ciganda and Beatriz Recari.

Catriona Matthew, one of five members of the 2011 winning team who are heading for the US, said: “It’s one of my favourite weeks of the year. We have a new team with a lot of rookies but it is a good team.”

Meg Mallon, the US captain, gave one of her two wildcards to Michelle Wie while Morgan Pressel’s fourth- place finish in the Women’s British Open saw her squeeze into the qualifying places.
