Aussie Jason Day aiming for first major success

Aussie ace Jason Day has knocked on so many major doors in recent years and he’s hoping to barge right through this particular one and finally break his majors duck this weekend.

Day has really made a name himself in the US Open and Masters in the past few years – he finished runner-up in the former in 2011 and this year (to Justin Rose of course) and was second best at the 2011 Masters and third at Augusta earlier this year.

However, his Open record isn’t so hot: this is only his third Open appearance and the best he’s managed to date is 30th at Royal St George’s in 2011.

But this time he’s well in the frame, dangerously lurking at +2 after shooting plucky rounds of 73 and 71.

Day is under no illusions about the tough task awaiting him as he prepares to tee-off in the 3rd round alongside Hunter Mahan at 1.35pm. “This is definitely the hardest major I’ve played in patience-wise because it is just very difficult to get the ball near the hole.

“Once you start attacking pins you then start making mistakes and you start getting frustrated and this is a golf course that can easily get you frustrated.”

Day has undergone extensive treatment on his damaged right wrist which he is hoping won’t affect him too much. But he knows it’s vital he – more than anyboyd – keeps the ball out of the penal rough and bunkers to protect it from further damage.

He admits: “It really hurts particularly playing punch shots or hitting out of a bunker on an upslope.”
