Fantasy Golf: FedEx St. Jude Classic preview

The 2013 Today’s Golfer Fantasy Golf game stays in America this week for the FedEx St. Jude Classic at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee.

The 7,239-yard layout was the toughest of the 13 par-70s in non-Majors on the PGA Tour last season so it should provide a good test in preparation for next week’s US Open.

Finding fairways and greens has proven very difficult here in recent years but the relatively small greens mean its scrambling for par percentage has been relatively high.

The par 3s and 4s average well over par but the two par 5s check in at 4.62 so this is where many players will have to make their scores – length will be an advantage, providing it’s not too wild.

Here is the six-man Today’s Golfer team for the FedEx St. Jude Classic:

Brandt Snedeker, £4.0m
The world number six is the highest-ranked player in the field. He missed the cut last week but has a win and two runners-up, a third and three more top 10s this season. The Nashville native is 10th in fairways hit, 11th in GIR, 18th in strokes gained putting, 11th in adjusted scoring and first in par-4 scoring.

Phil Mickelson, £3.8m
Lefty’s had an up-and-down season but he can’t be discounted in the field with only five of the world’s top 40. He won in Phoenix and has a couple of thirds but missed the cut in his last start at The Players. Ranks eighth in strokes gained putting and 27th in adjusted scoring.

Dustin Johnson, £3.0m
The defending champion has struggled with a back injury in recent weeks but he showed good form around the Masters – when he last completed four rounds. He’s fourth on tour in driving distance and 8th in birdie average.

Charles Howell III, £1.5m
A tied 21st finish at The Memorial was his ninth top 25 of the season – five have been top 10s. He has a pair of top 10s here in 2004 and 2011 and he’s fifth in scrambling, 12th in strokes gained putting, 14th in adjusted scoring and T4 in par-4 scoring.

Ryan Palmer, £1.1m
The Texan has three top 15s and no missed cuts in his last six starts and finished T3 here last year. Ranks 28th in GIR and eighth in adjusted scoring.

Scott Stallings, £1.0m
He followed up a T4 at Colonial with another T4 at The Memorial last week, where he shot the lowest round on Sunday. He’s solid throughout the bag and sits 37th in the all-around ranking. Tied for 25th in his TPC Southwind debut in 2011.
