Fantasy Golf: FedEx Cup playoff - The Barclays

Published:

The first leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs begins this week with The Barclays at Ridgewood Country Club. Lots of golf shots will be hit. Some of them will be bad; most of them will be good. It might rain a bit, but it will probably be a lot warmer than it is here at the moment. Some golfers who have made lots of money this year will make some more. Lovely.

Here are the six point-winning machines we’re backing this week:

Jim Furyk, £2.2m
Furyk may be struggling to seal the deal like two horny teenagers stuck at third base this season, but he’s finished in the top-20 in his last six starts and boasts some impressive stats: he’s moved to second in proximity to hole and first in scrambling. His lack of length will always make it tougher for him to take home trophies, but for some guaranteed points, it’s hard to look past him.

Rickie Fowler, £1.8m
At £1.8m, Rickie Fowler been a Fantasy Golf bargain that tat-for-cash expert David Dickinson would be proud of. (Rickie and the presenter could get along well, actually – one of them having orange clothes and the other an orange face.) Although winless this season, the 25-year-old Californian has seven top-10 finishes, including top-fives in all four Majors. He fared well at Ridgewood in 2010, putting himself strongly in contention before fading with a final-round 74. He’s a different player, these days, and could see it through to the end this time round.

Sergio Garcia, £3.5m
He lost in a playoff to Vijay Singh here in 2008, which shows he knows his way around the course. He leads the PGA Tour in adjusted scoring and has secured five top-three finishes this summer, including three runner-up finishes in his last five starts. Form + course pedigree = points.

Nick Watney, £2m
After a scruffy start to the season, Watney has turned things around recently with three top-15s in his last four starts, including a good run at the title at the Wyndham Championship. He won this event at Bethpage in 2012 and has finished in the top-10 four times in the last five years.

Jimmy Walker, £2.4m
Jimmy Walker is enjoying the kind of dream season that usually comes in black and white with a rousing orchestral soundtrack. He has three wins among nine top-10 finishes this year, and has been in the top-10 in three of the four Majors. He’s second for birdie average and seventh in strokes gained putting. HE’S GOOD AT MAKING BIRDIES, PUTTING THE BALL IN THE HOLE, AND WINNING GOLF TOURNAMENTS – what are you waiting for?

Brandt Snedeker, £3m
After a slow start to the season, the 2012 FedExCup champion is back in form with five top-15s in his last eight starts. He’s up to 15th in strokes gained putting and will be keen for another strong showing here as he vies for a Ryder Cup pick.
