Fantasy Golf: US PGA Championship preview

The 2014 Fantasy Golf game returns this week for the US PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Club.

From August 7-10 the last Major tournament of the season, the US PGA will be one of the final stages for players to show their stuff for a Ryder Cup spot. At 7,458 yards, the par 71 course designed by Jack Nicklaus was opened for play in 1986 and was seen as doubtful to have any impact on the game. But when the PGA of America chose Valhalla to host the US PGA in 1996, the course was instantly praised and since then Valhalla has became one of the great platforms of golf.

The Louisville, Kentucky based course now plays host of the US PGA for the third time. The last time the US PGA was at Valhalla was in 2000, where an incredible tournament took place, the end result was Tiger Woods winning his third straight major of the year, by making a 6-foot birdie putt to force a playoff with Bob May and beating him in the first three-hole playoff in the US PGA.

In a 28-year history, Valhalla has become one of the greatest courses in the game, last year saw Jason Dufner take the Wanamaker Trophy, but with a number of players on fine form, this year is a tough one to call.

Here’s TG’s six man team for the US PGA Championship:

Rory McIlroy £5.5m
McIlroy is on an incredible hot streak and is a hot favourite to take top prize. The winner of the 2012 US PGA Championship, McIlroy regained the world number one spot after taking victory at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational last week and looks set to take the Wanamaker Trophy again. There is still doubt that he’ll be able to pull off a fourth major win, but in his current form the doubt is very small.

Jim Furyk £2.2m
With an impressive season so far, Furyk has shown good form and finshed well in the last two major championships, coming 12th at the US Open and 4th at The Open. The world number eight has finished second in three separate tournaments this season and will no doubt be looking to go one place further and take home some silverware.

Keegan Bradley £2.6m
Bradley may not have won the US PGA since August 2011, but he has a great record in this event. He has good length off of the tee, and finished 4th place at this year’s US Open and WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and will be one to watch out for.

Matt Kuchar £3.0m
Americans have had a rich history of winning at Valhalla and one of the most consistent players in the game could take top prize in Louisville. Winner of the RBC Heritage, Kuchar will make his first trip to Valhalla this week and has had a good season so far, showing fine form over the last few weeks by finishing T4 at the Canadian Open and T12 respectively at the WGC Bridestone Invitational.

Scott Brown £0.8m
The 31-year-old Brown has had a tough season of cuts and has missed the last two majors. Despite this he finished T5 at the John Deere Classic and the RBC Heritage, an outsider at best.

Erik Compton £0.6m
Compton comes at good value in an expensive week, he hasn’t had the best of seasons, but he finished tied for second at the US Open and is always one to watch out for on home soil.
