Fantasy Golf: US Open 2014

This week sees Fantasy Golf head to a significantly remodelled Pinehurst No 2 (you can read about the course changes in our US Open preview here) for the second Major of the season, the US Open.

UK golfers have fared well in recent years, Justin Rose took the crown last year to join Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell as winners in three of the last four years, separated only by Webb Simpson.

A 7,520-yard par-70 is going to make life tough for short-hitters, while the notoriously tricky ‘upturned saucer’ greens will make a high ball flight desirable. Ultimately, the winner will be decided by what happens on and around the greens.

Here’s Team TG:

Phil Mickelson, £4m
He’s got everything you need to win on this course, and his short game craftsmanship could separate him from the field. Having finished second a record six times, can he finally get the monkey off his back and bag a career grand slam?

Rory McIlroy, £5.5m
Hits it high and long, which will be a real benefit here. He’s playing fantastic golf and is third in adjusted scoring. His 2011 win at Congressional shows he can get it done in this tournament.

Harris English, £1.6m
Form has been slightly sketchy of late, but with a win and five top 10s this season, he’s not to be discounted.

Francesco Molinari, £1.8m
Not an obvious choice, perhaps, but he’s been playing well of late and, by all accounts, showing some scintillating form in the practice rounds.

Billy Horschel, £1.6m
Showing good form of late with a T6 last week and was T4 in last year’s US Open at Merion.

Niclas Fasth, £0.5m
If you’re going to have Phil and Rory in your team, you’re going to need to find some value elsewhere. He’s had a couple of top 30s in his last few starts, so could sneak into the top-20 and bag you some unexpected points.
