Cañizares claims victory in Morocco

Alejandro Cañizares completed an emphatic wire-to-wire victory at the Trophée Hassan II to end an eight-year wait for his second European Tour title.

Cañizares led from the very start with an opening 62, just like defending champion Marcel Siem 12 months ago, and completed a five shot win with a closing round of 70.

That gave the Spaniard a 19 under par total in Agadir, with England’s Andy Sullivan storming home in 29 shots for a best-of-the-day 63 to earn second place.

Victory completes an superb six months for the 31-year-old, who has not missed a cut since September. That run that now stretches to 16 tournaments and includes three other top-ten finishes.

Speaking after his victory, Cañizares  said, “I was very accurate and solid with my irons. I left myself lots of chances and although I did not make all of them, the first day was the key. I putted great the first day, shot ten under and just kept pushing on.”
