Argentine Gomez lands first US Tour title

It was a sorry Sunday for England’s Greg Owen who failed to win his first US Tour victory after being outgunned in the final round of the St Jude Classic by Argentine Fabian Gomez.

Seasoned campaigner Owen was the overnight leader alongside Gomez and carded a level-par 70 in the final round at TPC Southwind.

But he finished four shots adrift after the 37-year-old Argentine shot 66 to clinch his maiden US Tour victory.

Gomez dropped two shots behind Owen after seven holes, but pulled level at the turn and led from the 11th.

It was a  frustrating day for the Englishman angrily snapped his 3-wood after finding water at the 12th.

Five-time major winner Phil Mickelson finished in a five-way tie for third at -8, signing off with a stunning round of 65.

‘Lefty’  – a six-time US Open runner-up – is aiming to break that sequence and complete the career Grand Slam of majors at Chambers Bay this week.
