Phil Mickelson splits up with coach Butch Harmon

The successful golfing ‘marriage’ of Phil Mickelson and coach Butch Harmon has ended after an eight-year partnership.

‘Lefty’ flew to Harmon’s Las Vegas base to inform him their time was up and that he intended moving in another ditrection.

Said Mickelson: “It’s just that at the moment I need to hear new ideas from a different perspective.”

With Harmon by his side, Mickelson won a dozen US Tour titles and clinched the 2010 Masters and 2013 Open Championship at Muirfield. However, since holding aloft the Claret Jug two years ago, he has struggled to find his form.

It’s a blow for 72-years-old Harmon – “I see nothing wrong with him seeking advice from another source…we’re great friends and always will be” – but clearly not the end of the world: his superstar stable features the likes of Rickie Fowler and Dustin Johnson.
