Russell Knox has a new putter and it’s absolutely GINORMOUS

There isn’t much that Russell Knox won’t try in his hunt for success. Only a month ago we discovered that the 30-year-old had turned to Google in the hunt for a putting tip that would change his game. He found one, and it worked, helping him secure his first European Tour title at the WGC-HSBC Champions.

The tip clearly isn’t working its magic at the moment. Knox is 152nd in strokes gained putting and has missed two cuts in six starts in 2016.

Like all golfers struggling on the greens, Knox’s attention eventually turned to his putter. “I’ve got zero confidence with my putter,” said Knox in January. Before the start of the WGC-Dell Match Play, Knox ditched his Scotty Cameron Tour Rat 2 in favour of something rather unusual.

Is it bigger the better?

That sizable beast is a Cure RX5. The head is six inches long and features adjustable weights which can move the moment of inertia – basically the amount the putter will resist rotation – from “high” to “extreme”. In short, the Cure RX5 is designed to be extremely stable, which makes sense – it’s always going to be harder to twist something that size.

It also features just 1.5 degrees of loft, which is low compared to around a three degree average for putters.

The supersized putter helped Knox to a half with David Lingmerth and a victory over Chris Kirk, but defeat to Branden Grace saw him finish third in his group, failing to advance to the last-16.

It will be interesting to see whether Knox sticks with the gargantuan putter or returns to something that less resembles a spaceship. Ultimately, it’s whatever works. We’d use a putter that in the shape of Donald Duck’s head if it helped us hole more.
