Henrik Stenson fired a final-round 64 to win his sixth PGA Tour title at the Wyndham Championship - and he did it without a driver in his bag
Technically, Stenson was only playing in the Wyndham Championship because he needed to reach 15 PGA Tour events this season. His last three starts at Sedgefield Country Club had been two missed cuts and a withdrawl due to flu, but with a few good results under his belt the last few weeks - he
He was in a tight battle to the finish with Ollie Schniederjans, but Stenson's three birdie stretch from 15-17 (including a 10-footer for birdie at the par-3 16th and a 27-foot birdie make at the par-4 17th) secured his one-shot victory over the 24-year-old.
Schniederjans had also gone on a late-birdie run of his own, birdieing three of the final four holes - but it was the 2016 Open Champion who would win for his first time since lifting the Claret Jug.
And he did it without a driver in his bag - using only a 3-wood, 4-wood or long irons off the tee. The 41-year-old also stuck with a decision he made at the recent World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, using four wedges for the first time in his career. In the process, Stenson boosted his chances considerably in the Fed-Ex Cup standings - which he has won twice - moving from 75th to 23rd.
“It's certainly a good time to start firing,” he said. “We know the kind of damage you can do during the Playoffs when the points are up to four times the normal season, right, so if you get hot and keep on playing well, certainly a chance to challenge for the overall.
“… It's the first step, and delighted to get a win this year.”
