Golf Sixes Preview: Everything you need to know

The second edition of GolfSixes is back for 2018 at Centurian Golf Club in St Albans: Here’s everything you need to know about the pairs format, the teams, and how to watch.

With the addition of female teams and the retention of themed golf holes that include holes with a shot clock or nearest the pin contest, Golf Sixes returns for a second year – a week after the PGA Tour held their own two-man pairs competition at the Zurich Classic.

Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup Captains Thomas Bjorn and Catriona Matthew are the first mixed team to be competing, and are joined by two other female-only teams as Charley Hull and Georgia Hall form an English team and Mel Reid and Carlota Ciganda reprise their Solheim Cup pairing for a European team.

Defending champions Lucas Bjerregaard and Thorbjørn Olesen have also returned to represent Denmark in the fast-paced competition as the 16 teams go head to head on the specifically designed 6 hole course for a total prize fund of €1 million with the eventual winners receiving €100,000 each.

Golf Sixes: The Format

Matches will be played over all six holes with 1 point awarded for each hole won. The winner of each match will be the player with most points at the end of six holes.

The format is greensomes, where both players in each team hit tee shots on each hole. The best tee shot is selected and then the team alternate play of all subsequent shots required to complete the hole.

On Saturday May 5, the 16 teams will be split into four groups of four teams, with the top two teams from each group progressing to the knockout stages.

The quarter-finals, semi-finals, 3rd/4th place play-off match and the final will all be contested on Sunday May 6.

In the group stages, 3 points will be given for winning a match, 1 point will be given for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.
