The Match:Tiger vs Phil to be broadcast on Sky Sports Golf

‘The Match’ between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will be free to watch in the UK for all Sky Sports Customers

It’s taken a long time to be announced, but golf fans in the UK have finally been told how they can watch the much talked about showdown between Woods and Mickelson.

The $9million showdown will be shown live on Friday from 8pm on Sky Sports Golf, with five hours of coverage that will show the feed from American broadcaster TNT, hosted by MGM Resorts International.

It’s been a much-hyped but controversial event, with both players insisting at their joint press conference earlier in the week that it is not simply a money-grabbing opportunity but one that they think will be received well.

Next: Mickelson and Woods planning big money side-bets

“Hopefully, it will be received well by the viewers at home,” Mickelson had said at a press conference in Las Vegas. “It’s a glimpse into the future of sports. We’ll have live odds on screen so the viewers can place wagers, and they’ll be able to hear all of the banter.

“This event is designed to be a unique golfing experience for the viewer, with the insight, the drone coverage, the live on-screen gambling and the live microphones.”

However, both Woods and Mickelson drew a lot of criticism for pictures of them posing with the obscene amount of money in addition to making the first initial side-bet (which there will be plenty of throughout) of $200,000 – and Tour professionals like Eddie Pepperell and Carly Booth were quick to speak out against the whole premise of the event, which is only available on pay-per-view in America.
