Note from the editor: I spend a lot of time with golf equipment designers, and I’m always impressed by their passion and dedication to make clubs that are better than what’s gone before. They never cease to amaze me with ingenious ways of making sticks with which to hit balls.

This issue includes some of the biggest equipment launches of the year from two of the biggest names in golf, Callaway and TaylorMade. The Epic Flash and M5/M6 drivers feature some seriously cutting-edge technology, from Callaway’s AI-created Flash Face to the resin that’s injected into every single TaylorMade driver coming off the production line.

The effort, engineering and testing that goes into these clubs is astonishing – and that’s why it frustrates me when I read glib comments on social media that these new clubs are all “marketing BS”, or that “it won’t be as good as my 2005 G5…” or that “they’re just ramming more new launches down our throats…” No-one is forcing anyone to buy this kit.

No-one is forcing anyone to read about it, or comment on it, or watch the video on it. Will golfers who bought an Epic or M4 last year see distance and dispersion gains by investing £499 in the latest version? Possibly. But these clubs aren’t aimed at these golfers. They’re aimed at the majority of us whose driver/fairway/ irons are five years old or more. Will the owners of these clubs see distance and dispersion gains by getting fitted for the latest versions. Without a doubt.

We’re in the process of testing all these new clubs back-to-back as we speak – the results will be on our website (where you’ll already find our first test verdict) and in the next issue.  Until then, let’s be thankful that golf’s R&D depts are always pushing the boundaries of design on our behalf so that we – if we choose – can get new clubs that will help us have more fun.

TG Columnists: 2019 Predictions
In this month’s issue of TG our columnists Andrew Cotter and Nick Dougherty put a focus on what they expect from the golfing calendar. Cotter goes bold with some satirical predictions that include majors for Tiger and Rory and a LOT of hangover-fuelled top 10s for Eddie Pepperell. Meanwhile Dougherty reckons this is the year McIlroy breaks his Augusta hoodoo and Cameron Champ makes an even bigger statement.
