Robert MacIntyre in heated bust-up with Kyle Stanley after Open partner strikes caddie’s mum, and fails to shout ‘fore’

A furious Robert MacIntyre confronted playing partner Kyle Stanley during the second round of The Open at Royal Portrush after the American twice hit people in the crowds without shouting ‘fore’, including his caddie’s mother.

The Scot, who is making his Open debut this week, was angered when the two-time PGA Tour winner first hit a marshal on the shin with a wayward drive on the 14th, and then failed to shout ‘fore’ as he sent another tee shot careering towards spectators on the 17th, this time striking caddie Greg Milne’s mother, Stephanie.

MacIntyre reported that she was uninjured, but that didn’t stop him from confronting his playing partner on the 18th and calling him out in his press conference afterwards.

“We’re shouting as it’s coming into the crowd and he’s just standing watching it,” complained MacIntyre, who finished runner-up at the British Masters in May. “People don’t have enough time to react after we shout. And so I told them how it was.

“I said I wasn’t happy. And they… didn’t really like the response. It wasn’t too pleasant. But you’ve got to tell them.”

Although MacIntyre did not elaborate on what he said during their heated exchange, the incident comes just six weeks after the PGA Tour issued a memo to players, reminding them about warning spectators when there is a danger of hitting someone.

“He didn’t take it well at all,” the 22-year-old admitted. “But that ball was going straight in the crowd. From the word go, it’s going in the crowd. Just shout, simple as that. Us, too, shouted as it was coming down, but you don’t have time. It’s too late then. People are diving out of the way of things when they should have more time.”

Kyle Stanley has since responded, saying that MacIntyre ‘left out a few details.”
