The Open: The best stats from round one

All the numbers and stats from the first round of The Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

ONE
Argentine Emiliano Grillo got the drinks in after a hole-in-one on the par-3 13th from 200 yards. It was the first ace at the Open Championship since Louis Oosthuizen on the 14th hole of Royal Troon in 2016.

TWO
The number of players who have won on the European Tour this season after carding an eight. There’s hope for Rory yet!

4.4
The average score to par on the 11th, making it the most difficult hole on the course. The par-5 2nd played as the easiest, with an average score of 4.63.

SEVEN
The amount of players who have won on the PGA Tour a week before winning a major, most recently Rory McIlroy in 2014. Dylan Frittelli, who won the John Deere Classic on Sunday, sits just two shots off the lead on three-under-par.

11
A round of 76 for Phil Mickelson was his highest first-round score in an Open in 11 years. It’s also the second time in the last decade he’s posted seven bogeys or more in an Open Championship round.

12
A spectator found Graeme McDowell’s tee shot on the 18th just 12 seconds after the three-minute time limit had elapsed. He went on to make a triple-bogey seven to finish on two over par.

14
The highest score of the day was carded by David Duval on the par-5 7th. The 2001 Open champion, who had earlier taken an eight after playing the wrong ball, signed for an nonuple bogey 14, the worst score on a single hole in an Open since 1950. Still, it could have been worse. It was originally recorded as a 15! For the full story, click here.

16
There’s a reason why it’s called Calamity Corner. Just 28 per cent of the field hit the par-3, 16th on the Dunluce course at Royal Portrush in regulation.

29
Ryan Fox’s six-under back nine was the lowest in Open history.

33-1
Rory’s odds to win plummeted from 8-1 to 33-1 after what was his second quadruple bogey of his major career on his opening hole.

42
Francesco Molinari ended a run of 42 holes without a bogey at The Open after dropping a shot on his 6th hole.

67.0
The opening round scoring average of the last 10 Open champions. Each of the last 20 Open winners were at or within five shots of the lead after round one. Good news for Shane Lowry, who posted a 67 to record his best-ever start in a major.

71
Amateur champion James Sugrue’s’ level par round of 71 means he tops the leaderboard for the Silver Medal.

78
Tiger’s opening round was his worst ever at The Open, and two strokes higher than he managed on the Old Course at St Andrews in 2015 at the height of his injury problems and chipping yips.

91
David Duval’s first round score (20-over-par) was eight shots worse than anyone else.

381 Yards
The longest drive of the day belonged to Callum Shinkwin.

700
Miguel Angel Jimenez became just the second man in history to make 700 appearances on the European Tour. Sadly, his first round wasn’t one to remember. He was one of just two men to finish without a birdie.

2016
First round leader J.B. Holmes’ best finish in a major came at the 2016 Open at Royal Troon, when he finished solo-third. It’s one of just two top-10s he’s had in his 34 previous major appearances.
