Wiesberger back in winners circle with Made in Denmark victory

Bernd Wiesberger held off a strong challenge from Robert MacIntyre to win his fifth European Tour title at the Made in Denmark presented by FREJA.
Bernd Wiesberger claimed his first victory in over two years after coming out on top of a thrilling round final battle with Robert MacIntyre at Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort on Sunday, posting a five-under 66 to finish on 14-under-par.
The Austrian, who was sidelined for seven months with a wrist injury last year, began the final round with a one shot lead and triumphed with a final-hole bogey in his 13th event back on Tour.
“I didn’t expect it all, I had a rough year last year. Winning is never easy,” he said. “It’s up there. Thinking about what was going on in the last year.
“I had so many great people helping me and getting me back to where I am right now. I’ve had so much support, it’s been amazing, and I’m proud to pay it back that way. I’m so thankful to so many people who have been there for me in the last year.
“It’s been such a great week here, I’ve enjoyed myself so much. I’ve loved the way I’ve started playing.”
The overnight leader began strongly with two birdies in his first three holes, but a double bogey on the fourth opened the door for Robert MacIntyre, whose four birdies in a five hole stretch saw the playing partners locked at the top from the eighth.
Wiesberger soon jumped two shots clear with a hole-out from 66 yards for eagle on the 11th, but there was a tie once more just two holes later as the leader struggled from the bunker and MacIntyre rolled in a 12-footer for birdie.
The pair matched birdies at the next, but an excellent approach to the par-three 16th put Wiesberger ahead by one, and MacIntyre made a mistake from the tee to drop two shots behind heading up the 18th.
It wasn’t to be a straight forward walk to victory for 33-year-old Wiesberger though, who found the hazard from the tee. He would end up rescuing a bogey, and MacIntyre failed to force a play-off after missing his long range birdie effort at the last.
It’s MacIntyre’s second runner-up finish in a row, and his playing partner was quick to pay tribute to the Scotsman on social media.
Frenchman Romain Langasque carded a 66 to finish at 11 under, two shots clear of Ireland’s Paul Dunne, Spaniard Pablo Larrazábal, English pair Chris Paisley and Oliver Wilson, and German Max Schmitt.
