A good bunker player doesn't even need to watch their shot to know whether it has gone close to the pin. They can tell just from the connection made with the sand.
The amount of sand you take, the depth of the sand and the connection with the sand will ultimately determine how far the ball travels.
A great drill to improve your bunker distance control is to draw a line in the sand and practice striking it. Then place a ball on or next to the line and repeat the same action. You should find you strike bunker shots with far more consistency.
