Choose the right putter

Some putters are face balanced, whilst others are weighted towards the heel. Either type can produce great results on the green, but only if they are used in the manner in which they have been designed.

Expert Gareth Johnston demonstrates how, when using a face-balanced putter, the optimum stroke is to take the putter head straight back and sweep it straight through the ball. To achieve this, the shaft of the putter should be on the same direct line as your forearms.

However, a heel weighted putter is designed to draw back on an inside line and swing through on that same inside arc. To achieve such a stroke, you should stand up taller, with the putter held lower to achieve more rotation.

Make sure that you’re using a putter that suits your stroke.
