Padraig Harrington has shot the round of the tournament so far to put himself right into contention for the Masters at the halfway stage.

The Irishman fired a four-under 68 to get back to +1 for the tournament, just three shots off the current lead.

And he said the famous course is playing like it probably did in the 1980s, before they lengthened it.

He said: “It’s perfect out there. It’s hard and fast, but if you put the ball in the right places you can make birdies – but put it in the wrong place and a bogey is likely.

“This is how I assume it would have played in the 80s – we’re hitting the same clubs into greens as the guys did back then. Before they lenghtened it I would hit 9-iton into the par-4 11th – today I hit a 6-iron, which is what that hole is meant to be.”

Brett Wetterich holds the lead in the clubhouse, despite dropping several shots late on in his round. On the 15th tee he was four under par, but he bogeyed that hole and the next to finish the day at two under.

South Africa’s Tim Clark is also at two-under after 16 holes.

Vijay Singh is also in the mix, currently tied sixth after a one-under round of 71 left him at even par for the tournament.

The other movers on day two include Jerry Kelly, who’s three-under 69 moves him into a tie for fifth, and Brit Bradley Dredge, who is currently tied sixth and three under for the day after 15 holes.

Justin Rose is a third of the way through his round, and is currently one over, whild David Howell had a disappointing day, shooting 75 to go to tied 10th.

Tiger Woods rallied with two birdies in his last four holes to finish the day three over. At one point he was five over par.
