Aug9 USPGA Euros

Quite apart from Graeme Storm’s extraordinary Thursday, it was a great day for many of the 30 Europeans in the field. Open Champion, Padraig Harrington, has suggested on many occasions since Carnoustie that other Euros may now find it easier to win major championships, and there is already some evidence that this could be true.

Lee Westwood shot a 1-under-par 69, which he said could just have easily been a 65. “I drove the ball really well today,” he said, “and hit a lot of fairways. In fact, I think I only missed two all day. I’ve been playing well since the beginning of the year in Asia and Europe, and got myself into positions without really capitalising on them.”

And, Padraig Harrington came back from a rocky start to make three consecutive birdies from the 13th, and finish also with a 69.
