Ian Poulter and Paul Casey have been chosen as wildcard picks for Nick Faldo’s Ryder Cup 2008 team!

Despite rumours that Darren Clarke was a shoe-in for the Ryder Cup team, Ian Poulter and Paul Casey have been chosen ahead of the experience offered by Clarke and others such as Colin Montgomerie.

Europe Ryder Cup captain Nick Faldo said: “I’ve been watching these guys through the summer. Ian Poulter is a very determined guy. I love his attitude and what he did at The Open — that back nine he played with the intention to win and had that emotional feeling.”

The call up was made even more surprising by the fact that Ian Poulter had chosen to miss his last opportunity to claim an automatic selection for the Ryder Cup 2008 team at the Jonnie Walker at Gleneagles.

Meanwhile, for his other Ryder Cup team pick Nick Faldo said he had been keeping an eye on Casey and waiting for his putting to improve.

“I’ve been watching Paul play and he has been playing absolutely the best through the summer,” Faldo said. “He has an extremely good record in the Ryder Cup and, going back, the Walker Cup.”
