Scot Paul Lawrie, the last Open champion at Carnoustie in 1999, is still in a state of shock after his woeful 18th drive which went OB and left him +5 and out of the championship.

“I’ve been driving awesome for two days and I haven’t a clue where that came. Golf is an amazing game – you can never work it out. I just hit a very poor shot and was severely punished,” said Lawrie who finished with a double bogey.

“I don’t know the stats, but tee-to-green I’ve hardly missed a fairway, hardly missed a shot. Okay, I’ve putted pretty poorly – I’ll have to pull a putter out of the loft tonight and have a bit of practice,” he reflected.
