Ryder Cup hero Darren Clarke has teamed up with Junior Golf Ireland (JGI) to promote the game amongst the nation’s youngsters.

The Darren Clarke Foundation will provide an initial 10 scholarships that will allow top performers from JGI’s various coaching programmes to become members at golf clubs.

Clarke said: “Many kids who show promise can’t pursue the game and become golf club members becasue they either don’t have the money or the contacts.”

Irish golf received the biggest boost possible earlier this month, after Dubliner Padraig Harrington won the 136th Open Championship at Carnoustie.

Director of Development for JGI Anne-Marie Hughes said: “Darren’s support will help some of these new young golfers to develop their talent to the highest level.

“The Foundation will also back the U10 age group initiatives and national winners will get the chance to meet and be coached by their hero at his Champions Weekend.”
