Olazabal misses out on Open

Jose Maria Olazabal narrowly missed out on qualification for the Open after losing a six-way playoff at Sunningdale on Monday.

The Spaniard, who finished his two rounds on -4, was beaten in the playoff by Simon Dyson and former Ryder Cup player Peter Baker on the third extra hole.

The two englishmen will join 16 other players who qualified from Sunningdale for the event at Royal Birkdale from 17-20 July, including Simon Wakefield, Ariel Canete, Ross Fisher and Steve Webster.

Darren Clarke and last year’s leading amateur, 19-year-old Rory McIlroy, also failed to qualify for the 137th Open.

Across the pond there were another two qualifying events at Dearborn and the TPC, both in Detroit, Michigan.

Among the 14 who emerged victorious from America were Davis Love III, Alex Cejka, Paul Goydos and Jeff Overton.

Goydos said: “This was my number one goal for the year. If nothing else happened this year, I wanted to play in The Open. A lot of other good things have happened on top of that, but this really has been my number one goal.”
