What’s In The Bag: Rory McIlroy’s TaylorMade equipment for 2024

What golf clubs and balls does Rory McIlroy use? Our in-depth review of what’s in the four-time Major champion’s bag for 2024.

Rory McIlroy is a TaylorMade staff golfer and uses a full bag of TaylorMade clubs.

Today's Golfer What's In The Bag is brought to you in association with Callaway Chrome Tour and Chrome Tour X golf balls.

One of the most influential people in golf, the Northern Irishman hasn’t always played TaylorMade clubs. He lifted his first two Majors (2011 US Open and 2012 US PGA) using Titleist clubs and the Pro V1 golf ball before joining Nike in 2013. He signed a ten-year deal rumored to be worth $150m with the American sports giant to use the brand’s clubs, ball, bag, clothing, and shoes.

Rory McIlroy signed with Nike ahead of the 2013 season.

In 2017, following Nike’s decision to leave the golf equipment market, McIlroy signed a ten-year clubs, ball, and bag deal with TaylorMade, worth $100m. He also renegotiated his Nike apparel and shoes agreement, signing a fresh ten-year contract worth a reported $200m.

Rory McIlroy has been a TaylorMade player since 2017.

The 34-year-old turned pro in 2007, shortly after he’d topped the world amateur ranking, and won his first European Tour title in 2009 at the Dubai Desert Classic. His first PGA Tour win followed in 2010 at the Quail Hollow Championship.

He’s gone on to win a further 25 PGA Tour victories, including the Players Championship, Tour Championship, and Arnold Palmer Invitational, and 17 European (DP World) Tour titles, including flagship events such as the BMW PGA Championship and Genesis Scottish Open.

What driver does Rory McIlroy use?

Rory McIlroy uses a TaylorMade Qi10 driver (9°) with a Fujikura Ventus Black 6 X shaft.

TaylorMade's new 2024 driver!
Price: £529.00 / $629.99 RRP
McIlroy gave the world its first view of the new Qi10 driver by putting it into his bag for his final outing of the 2023 season at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. McIlroy returned to the UAE to open up his 2024 season, this time narrowly missing out on the win armed with the new Qi10 LS driver. McIlroy got his first win of 2024 – and his first with the TaylorMade Qi10 driver – at the Dubai Desert Classic. Rory switched out the Qi10 LS for a standard Qi10 earlier this season and he won the Zurich Classic alongside Shane Lowry with the Qi10.

2023 was a year of three drivers for McIlroy. He started with the Stealth Plus driver that he’d enjoyed so much success with in 2022 before switching to the Stealth 2 Plus during the Genesis Invitational, and lofted it up from 7.5º to 9º.

What fairway wood does Rory McIlroy use?

Rory McIlroy uses a TaylorMade Qi10 3-wood (15°) with Fujikura Ventus Black 8 X shaft and a TaylorMade Qi10 5-wood (18°) with Fujikura Ventus Black 9 X shaft.

TaylorMade's new fairway woods!
Price: £309.00 / $349.99 RRP
Rory also switched into TaylorMade's latest Qi10 fairway woods for 2024, upgrading from his Stealth Plus models that have served him well.

And while it's McIlroy's driving prowess typically grabs the headlines, his performance off the turf with fairway wood in hand is second to none.

Rory’s 3-wood is pushed to maximize distance and accentuate the strength of his game – hitting the ball a lot farther than everyone else. That creates a substantial gap in yardage when you jump from his 3-wood to his longest iron. Insert the 5-wood. It’s a club that needs to cover 250 yards or 290 – and every number in between.

TaylorMade's Senior Tour Rep, Adrian Rietveld referred to Rory as "the best 5-wood player I've ever seen". "It’s really a unique club for Rory because of that versatility,” he says.

"It’s shorter than a standard 5-wood and has a slightly stronger loft at 17.5°. It’s like watching an artist at work, seeing all the different shots he can hit with it.”

What irons does Rory McIlroy use?

Rory McIlroy uses a TaylorMade P Series Proto 4-iron and TaylorMade Rors Proto Irons (5-9), all with Project X Rifle 7.0 shafts

McIlroy continues to play the Rors Proto irons from 5-9 iron, and they play similarly to the P7MB us punters can purchase but he has switched the 4-iron for a P-Series Proto model.

The lofts of his irons are close to standard with 4° increments between irons, while lie angles change at a .5° increment. They weigh in at D4.5 with Project X Rifle 7.0 shafts and 6.5 in his wedges (Tour pros generally use softer shafts in their wedges for added feel).

What putter does Rory McIlroy use?

Rory McIlroy uses a TaylorMade Spider Tour X putter with a SuperStroke Zenergy Pistol Tour grip.

Price: £299.99 / $349.99 RRP
Spiders are the best TaylorMade putters ever made, and they’ve reached a level where some models now have a legacy and genuine cult following.

There are current models, but the Spider X Rory uses, which launched back in 2019, and the famous Spider Tour that put TaylorMade putters on the map in 2017, are both scarcely available to buy.

What golf ball does Rory McIlroy use?

Rory McIlroy uses a TaylorMade TP5x Golf Ball (#22)

Best tour standard distance golf balls
Rory’s switch to the new TP5x ball has seen him gain yards and was a big factor in optimizing the performance of his fairway woods. For him, that ball was spinning less, but more importantly, it was “holding” the spin.

As Rietveld describes it, every player at this level has a high-spin ceiling and a low-spin floor with each club. The best way to judge the performance of a golf ball is to measure how much spin jumps on their high-spin swings. When that jump is minimal, or “holds", that's when the ball is right.
