PGA Championship 2024: Friday’s 2nd round tee times delayed due to serious traffic accident | Scheffler plays despite arrest

Tee times and groupings for the second round of the PGA Championship from Valhalla Golf Club.

The second round of the 2024 PGA Championship was due to get underway at 7:15 local time (12:15 BST) but a fatal traffic accident outside the entrance to Valhalla Golf Club caused major congestion, necessitating a delayed start of play.

A PGA of America statement read: “This morning we were devastated to learn that a worker with one of our vendors was tragically struck and killed by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla Golf Club. This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship. We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones.”

The delay of 1 hour and 20 minutes means the first tee times moved to 8:35am local time (1:35pm BST).

The delay meant world number one Scottie Scheffler arrived in time for his tee time, after being arrested on Friday morning.

Friday’s early starters will look to close the gap on Xander Schauffele, with Thursday’s record-breaker and overnight leader not back in action until the later wave (2.38pm local, 7.38pm BST).

The American fired a nine-under-par 62, the lowest round in Major history, as he became the first player to shoot two rounds of 62 at a Major. Just four men have made that score and Schauffele is responsible for the last two of them (2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla, 2023 US Open at Los Angeles Country Club).

Collin Morikawa, Tom Kim, and Tom Hoge, who all sit four shots back, will be among the morning wave hoping to close the gap on the leader when play gets underway.

Rory McIlroy, who also shot an opening round of 66, will head out after lunch as he bids to end his ten-year wait for a fifth Major.

Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala, who share second place after Thursday’s play, will also be among the afternoon starters, along with Tiger Woods, who is one-over par and needs a good Friday to ensure he plays the weekend.

The weather looks set to be more testing for the second round and play could even face delays with mist, rain and thunderstorm forecast. With the delayed start, any delays could make it impossible for the later starters to finish their round on Friday, requiring a weekend rejig.
