The European Golf Club

What we say

Rugged duneland with extraordinary views, injected with the passion of Pat Ruddy - you could lose a football in the first cut. Modern links with classic touches, deep bunkers and a wonderful run beside the sea.

Genial Irish golf course designer Pat Ruddy has created a links paradise amid towering dunes on the Wicklow coast. Virtually every hole will take your breath away, especially those on the memorable back nine. With huge, heavily-sleepered bunkers and soft spikes frowned upon, it's a wonderful step back into how links golf used to be. It may be a bit off the beaten track, but it's well worth taking the time, trouble and considerable expense - the green fees are a bit pricey and clearly aimed at the US market.

No wonder it's a regular stop for golf course record holder Tiger Woods on his pre-Open warm-up Tour of classic Irish links.

The Top 100 Golf Courses in Britain and Ireland

The European Club was designed by Pat Ruddy and is owned and operated by him and his family. Ruddy is a golf writer and golf course designer whose work will be found also at such highly regarded Ireland venues as Ballyliffin (Glashedy), Druids Glen and St. Margaret's. The European Club features 20-holes (two extra holes are in play most days) of exciting links golf through tumbling dunes with dramatic views of the Irish Sea from no fewer than sixteen of the holes! Course record holder is one Tiger Woods who popped into The European, along with Mark O'Meara, David Duval and Scott McCarron, as a warm-up for  the 2002 British Open at Muirfield.

Stay & Play: Arklow Bay Hotel and The Grand Hotel in Wicklow.
