It could be argued the famous ‘Anaconda’ bunker which snakes for 200 yards up the left of the par-5 5th and the equally well- known image of the sand-strewn 18th do Chart Hills a disservice.
They may be useful trademarks but they suggest this Kent parkland is about little more than bunkers, when in fact it has a lot more to it. For a start, there is always lots of fairway to hit. Chart Hills also has lots of oak trees and lots of water, so your penalties are just as often wet or covered in bark.
This was Sir Nick’s first course design and it is an admirable effort – even if its often exacting nature must leave some of the infrequent golfers who tread its fairways (it is a popular corporate day venue) vexed at what they are battling with.
