21-30

21 – Portstewart (Strand)

Portstewart has been around for over 125 years but only since 1990 has the championship Strand layout which is so revered today existed.

22 – Portmarnock Hotel

Bernhard Langer was imaginatively engaged to design a course on linksland which adjoins the historic Old course.

23 – K Club (Palmer)

The host of the 2006 Ryder Cup may have lost a little of its lustre now the hype has died down since the biennial matches. But if you like pristine fairways and an American-style test, you will enjoy it.

24 – Mount Juliet

Host of the AmEx WGC Championship when Tiger, Phil and co came over to Ireland, Mount Juliet is the epitome of the picturesque, manicured parkland.

25 – Carton House (Montgomerie)

Colin Montgomerie has produced a first-class modern parkland on unremarkable land. It is a long way round and when you are hitting long clubs into greens and off tees, you will inevitably stray from the fairway.

26 – Castlerock

Here is a little gem near Portrush and Portstewart which is deservedly starting to get more exposure. There are some modest holes which mean it doesn’t make it into the top 20, but there are plenty of brilliant ones too.

27 – Fota Island

This new course was laid out in 1993 by Christy O’Connor Jnr and amateur legend Peter McEvoy. It was host to the Irish Open in 2001 and 2002.

28 – Ballybunion (Cashen)

Exciting, verging on the slightly crazy – that is how the Cashen is often described. So if you don’t mind the odd bit of madness and you relish fun on the golf course, you’ll love it here.

29 – Druid’s Glen

This picturesque 1995 parkland matured very quickly – it’s just as well; a year after opening it hosted the Irish Open.

30 – Dooks

In 2006 Martin Hawtree completed a four-year transformation which has seen Dooks secure a place in our top 30. Predictably scenic panoramic views are complemented by gorse, heather and flowers closer to hand.
