What we say

► See the golf courses featured in our Top 100 rankings

First impressions can be misleading, especially if you walk to the first tee on a links expecting some serious humps and bumps, only to find flatlands. Hoylake can be a bit like that but, rest assured, this is a gem of a course that only unveils its full character once you are underway.

The greens are lightning fast but fairly flat. As for the rough, there are only two words that can be said really – avoid it! Some of the holes were changed around for the 2006 Open Championship but there’s no doubt about the star hole: it’s definitely the par 3 13th. It’s right on the coast and on a beautiful summer’s day there’s no better place to be.

  • 4.5 out of 5 Hoylake

This is one of those courses like Birkdale,Hillside that you have to cross off your list. Its got everything history, quality, tradition and above all the hardest track I have ever played on.After saying that for me the likes of hillside,Formby sit a lot better on the eye but for a true test of your ability not many can match it.Cheap it isn't even the winter deals but who cares its a must play course and when you sit in the clubhouse after crying into your soup the history in the place will help you forget all the bad shots and just remember all the good

we had a super day here, the welcome was great and the staff very helpful / friendly. The course was a joy and is quite flat without any huge dunes. The best run of holes are 8 thro to 16 !
