What we say
Home of a world-class resort and the par-72 Championship course. And the latter, created by six-times major champion Sir Nick Faldo, is a fantastic test of golf and is kept in pristine condition.
The first five holes have a distinctly woodland feel and are relatively scoreable. But don’t let this fool you as the true personality and challenge of the course emerges when you climb up the elevated 6th tee. The stunning view of the Lough and a stiff breeze give an altogether more ‘linksy’ feel and there are some phenomenal vistas and fantastic holes running alongside the Lough. There’s no better feeling than clipping a wedge or short iron to a green that juts out into the water.
You may be tempted to go off the tips on the shorter and more sheltered first few holes, but there are some brutally tough holes later in the round so it’s probably best to favour the yellows from the off.
Nick Faldo believes his new design at the striking new Lough Erne Golf Resort in Northern Ireland, could host a European Tour event. The resort is the ultimate expression in old world heritage and new world five star luxury. With stunning panoramic views from almost every vantage point, the hotel and its two championship golf courses rest on their own secluded island, nestling between Lower Lough Erne and Castle Hume Lough. Lough Erne is the dream of owner Jim Treacy, who was inspired after visiting Loch Lomand.
