My Favourite Hole – Soren Kjeldsen

12th, Augusta National
I love the 12th at Augusta National. It’s a short par 3 with a small green and I usually hit an 8-iron. You feel like you should hit it close but you’ve got the wind, a small target and firm and quick greens so it’s not as easy as it looks. I love it because you need to be precise to control the shape and trajectory of the shot – and that’s a big part of my game.
The pin placement is important too. It plays a little bit easier with the pin on the left but when it’s far right it’s very difficult because you’re playing a bit more of an angle towards the pin. The green has to be firm and fast. That’s what we like because you get rewarded with a good score if you play great but you’ll struggle if you don’t.
I like holes where a lot of things can happen. You can make a five without doing much wrong and you can make a two if you hit it close or hole a good putt. It’s great entertainment and the players get really nervous on the tee. We love that, we love to feel right on the edge.
I hate long par 3s and we’re hitting hybrid or long iron to big greens on a lot of courses. Most of the time we’re going to hit it on the green and two-putt for a par so there’s not a lot of fun and adventure in that. You want a little par 3 where you have to be pinpoint accurate and there are a lot of twos with the danger of making four or five.
