CLUB COMMENT: We have put in new back tees on the 4th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 16th. The existing 17th green is due to be re-shaped along with new bunkers and swales and a new back tee, and the 12th hole is going to have a new fairway bunker on the right.

Harry Colt was renowned for his heathland designs, many of which feature in this list, but Rye proves he could turn his hand to links too. He laid this superb course out as a raw 25 year old. It’s now easier to get a game here and there are some wonderful examples of clever design, notably at the 6th – a par 4 along a ridge, which is also in play on the fun, blind 13th. Bernard Darwin loved it here and moved into the Dormy House after his wife died in 1954. His leather armchair now sits in the men’s bar. It’s that kind of place.
