A new version of last year’s TP Red. This has already won on Tour in the hands of several TaylorMade Tour players, including Justin Rose. This ticks all the boxes, offering responsive feel, excellent spin and decent distance off the tee.

This is TaylorMade’s softer-feeling Tour Preferred ball, but neither tester found this caused them to lose yards off the tee. In fact, Malcolm gained a few compared to the TP Black but felt the ball span a little too much. Mark was pleasantly surprised with the distance and response he got from it.

It’s 15 per cent softer than the original TP Red. The multi layer mantle works with the core for a high launch angle.

TaylorMade has unveiled four new golf balls for 2008 - the Tour Preferred Red and Black and the Burner and Burner TP.

Justin Rose is among an elite group of TaylorMade Staff Players who’ve tested the ball with success.

Now TG is the first magazine in Europe to get our hands on them and we can officially reveal the technology behind them…

It’s called Low Drag Performance (LDP) and is a new aerodynamic dimple technology that helps the balls fly longer, even on your mishits.

“We analysed more than 80,000 swings and found that there was a significant amount of off-centre hits for players at every handicap level,” says Dean Snell, TaylorMade’s director of research and development.

“With Low Drag Performance, we’ve designed a technology that keeps the ball in the air longer while maintaining lift by reducing drag, or resistance against the ball in flight.”

The new TP balls will suit a wide range of players with driver spin rates between 1,000 to 3,000 rpm.

The TP Red is a four-piece ball suited to players with a higher spin rate.

The TP Black is a three-piece ball aimed at the lower spin player.

The complementing Burner and Burner TP golf balls feature the same LDP technology but have further design attributes for greater out-and-out distance off the tee.

The secret to big hits lies at the centre of the ball where a high-energy/low compression core combines with a special SpeedMantle layer to limit the spin off the driver.

But the Burner’s distance doesn’t come at the sacrifice of feel. The core’s 75-compression count combined with a soft loathane cover guarantees excellent spin and touch for greenside shots, TaylorMade claim.

All four TaylorMade balls will be available in shops in February, 2008, priced at £40 a dozen.

TG took all four balls out for a first hit yesterday and were impressed with the feel and feedback around the greens and how well the balls flew through the air.
