The MAVRIK was one of our best-performing drivers on test in 2020 and is a fantastic option for those seeking a long and strong driver, combined with excellent forgiveness and satisfying acoustics.

The MAVRIK produced ball speeds within 0.1mph of our fastest driver of the year (which you wouldn’t expect from a more forgiving model) and within two yards of our longest-carrying driver. But doing it while offering up the narrowest back and sidespin drop-offs (by 32%), as well as the tightest carry drop-offs (by 55%) of our whole test, is a seriously impressive performance.

Only a handful of drivers have ever changed the game as we know it. So rare are true revolutionary drivers, over the last four decades just a handful of models have genuinely changed the direction of our game and a collection of them have made it into the best drivers in golf.

Included in that elusive list is TaylorMade's Stealth driver which we included in our most forgiving drivers of 2022. For the majority of club golfers, the standard Stealth model offers a better combination of ball speed and backspin compared to the Stealth Plus, and thanks to the extra 15% MOI it will be more forgiving and easy to live with on the golf course.

The LTDx is a true driver unicorn – it is the first driver to achieve zero CGna and a high MOI at 5200. It is aimed at players who want maximum speed and distance but also value forgiveness and a straight ball flight.

The LTDx was tied for second (with the Callaway Rogue ST Max) for fastest ball speed, first and second at protecting ball speed and carry (within this category) respectively, and it was also our pro’s second longest forgiving driver; an undeniably impressive performance.

The more compact, traditional pear shaping of TSi3 is aimed at more consistent ball-strikers seeking ultimate control over their flight.

The new five-setting SureFit CG track offers more precise adjustments, from ‘most heel biased’ through to ‘most toe biased’, allowing players to fine-tune their shot shape and launch. Unlike TS3, the weight is now easily visible, allowing you to see its position without removing any parts. Its location at the very rear of the club also increases stability on those off-center hits.

The ZX5's weight is positioned low and deep in the head to raise MOI and forgiveness. Golfers can expect a confidence-inspiring sound and look at address, along with a forgiving launch and ball flight.

Each ZX driver, fairway, and hybrid has been engineered with a rebound frame that Srixon says provides a more efficient transfer of energy. Two zones (the driver face and body surrounding it) are specifically optimized to deform at impact and snap back, which Srixon says gives a more efficient transfer of energy than other driver designs.

A confidence-inspiring, draw-biased driver with heel-focused weight location, the ST-X 220 will appeal to players seeking a higher, right-to-left ball flight. With higher spin rates than its ST-Z counterpart, the ST-X will suit those with moderate swing speeds, needing help producing a more extended ball flight.

Mizuno drivers have come a very long way in just a few years. If you haven’t tried one for yourself in ages, and you’re not particularly swayed by the major driver brands, we’d seriously recommend giving the ST-X 220 a try. TG Equipment Editor, Simon Daddow really enjoyed hitting the model. He commented on how much he liked the sound and feel and the confidence the head shape gave.

Ping G drivers have been bought by hundreds of thousands of golfers over the years, and for many, they’ve always represented the benchmark for forgiveness, dependable performance, and honest design that’s led by engineering principles, not flashy gimmicks.

The G425 Max has a 460cc head that is rounder in shape than the LST model, and thanks to a 26g CG shifter (which is 10g more than the G410 Plus) you get 7% more MOI forgiveness than you did from the Ping G410 Plus. The Max also enables golfers to add 20% more draw bias or 16% more fade bias than the previous model, to help dial in your preferred shot shape.

Designed for players of all abilities, Callaway say the Paradym is their best combo of distance, forgiveness, and adjustability. It has a refined shape with high MOI and an adjustable weight track at the rear.

Artificial Intelligence, which Callaway have used in their R&D process since 2019, has played a key role in creating Paradym, helping Callaway design a new version of their revered Jailbreak technology and a new face, which they say is the world’s most advanced.

Cleveland’s uber-forgiving Launcher XL driver more than lives up to its name, and we rate it as one of the best golf drivers available. The three models –  XL, Lite, and Lite Draw – are 6.7% longer front to back and feature an 11% increase in MOI compared to the previous generation Launcher.

For golfers who don’t want to spend time getting fitted and players who are less worried about their gear and more focused on just getting out and having fun on the golf course, you really should have a look at Cleveland's Launcher XL family.

Cobra has taken the holistic view of a golfer’s overall driving game, by offering a “forgiving” option that doesn’t just focus on being the fastest or longest driver on the market. The XB has 24g of radial back weight (with 8g at the front to ensure stability) positioned within its modern, wide head.

The combination of the shape and rear-biased weighting means there’s a slight draw bias over the standard Radspeed model, too. The weight set-up gives extra dynamic lofting at impact which equates to a higher launch, a little extra backspin, and of course more forgiveness.

Wilson is particularly good at producing some of the best drivers for beginners and high handicappers, but better players may want to give them a try, too. Wilson drivers have impressed us in recent years with their consistent performance and excellent value for money.

The Staff D9 was designed with the help of Wilson Staff players Gary Woodland and Brendan Steele, and used more than 120 computers running seven days a week to calculate the best pattern for the D9's PKR (Peak Kinetic Response) face. It means center strikes are now 2.5mph faster than its predecessor, the D7, and our test found just a 3.4mph drop-off in ball speed on mis-hits, making it one of the best drivers for preserving ball speeds when not struck from the middle

TaylorMade says the SIM2 Max is the shape of forgiveness in a Mid – High Launch, Mid – Low Spin design. The aluminum back ring is beautifully CNC milled and thanks to TaylorMade’s final finish to final finish construction method, not a single gram is positioned inefficiently.

What does it mean in raw data terms? The SIM2 Max was just a couple of yards (that’s less than 1%) behind the Callaway Epic Max on carry distance (our longest traditional forgiving driver) during testing in 2021, which could well mean they’d switch places on a different day.

Never in 15 years of testing have we seen a driver outperform its peers by 12 yards of carry distance. Usually, once our pro’s ton of test shots have been averaged there’s no more than a handful of yards covering off the top few models. And a performance difference that small can easily be caveated with “data can be reversed or slightly different on another day testing”. But double-digit carry distance gains, in the hands of our test pro, are utterly unheard of here at TG.

The model will be at home in the hands of golfers who want to chase distance through lowering spin and players who like either a more workable driver or have a preference to see drives fly with a particular shot shape.

Since their introduction in 2021, Titleists TSi drivers have become the most-played drivers on the PGA Tour with more than 100 players putting them in the bag. Both the TSi2 and TSi3 drivers feature Titleist’s SureFit hosel with 16 independent loft and lie settings, plus headweight adjustability (in two-gram increments, ranging from -4g to 4g) to create an ideal and consistent ball flight for your game.

The more modern-shaped TSi2 is aimed at players who want speed and accuracy across the entire face. It has an exceptionally stable high-MOI design with an adjustable swing weight and deeper, lower fixed CG to maximize distance through high launch and low spin.

The M5’s T-Track sliding weight system offers 20g of mass to position to personalize spin, launch and shot shape. And that’s a lot of weight to put low and forward in a driver head (600rpm and a degree of launch change in fact) if you want to chase low spin and distance at all costs. Just remember this reduces forgiveness.

M5 is much more than just a low spin option, too. Rory, Rahm, and Tiger have all gamed the M5 in their own bags at some point, which reinforces our opinion that it’s a brilliant option. Vast amounts of tuning options takes M5 to a different level for serious players.

Thanks to extra heel weighting the ST Max D is the family’s most draw-biased model. Hopefully, slicers already understand they’re distance impaired (as slice spin hovers up power going offline rather than traveling towards the target), but Callaway’s most draw-enabled driver the Rogue ST Max D is set up to counteract that slice spin, and keep golfers on the mown grass more often.

Callaway says the Max D has less face progression, so there’s more time to square the face at impact. A more upright lie angle helps start shots further left of the target, there’s a forgiving stretched address profile and internal and external weighting to create maximum shot shape correction.

Black Friday Golf Driver Deals: Buying Guide

Black Friday sales can be a little tricky to navigate with a plethora of retailers all vying for your business as the holiday season approaches. To help keep you focussed we have suggested a few considerations to bear in mind so you come out the other end with a driver that will do you proud.

Budget

Just because items are plastered with sale banners and claims of huge discounts, it’s worth doing your due diligence and making sure the advertised savings appear genuine. It’s also important to set yourself a budget, just as you would when shopping at any other time of the year. Even with healthy savings, golf drivers are expensive pieces of equipment, so make sure you consider the cost, not just the savings.

Timing

This is perhaps one of the trickiest aspects of the Black Friday sales to get right, as when they’re gone -they’re gone! Discounts across the sales period are constantly fluctuating depending on which items are flying off the shelf and which ones are struggling to shift. In the same way as you might approach buying a flight, we suggest monitoring prices for a short period to give you an indication if they are likely to continue to drop or if they will remain constant until the stock is gone. The very best deals can often be found closer to the day itself, however, you do run the risk of your number one pick being sold out with this approach.

Custom Fitting

Often overlooked, but dialing in your optimal driver set-up through a custom fitting session will likely be of more benefit than the slight performance edge you hope to achieve by selecting one driver over another. This point is demonstrated by our Equipment Editor Simon Daddow, who lost 3.1 mph of ball speed overall compared to last year’s test, but still gained six yards of distance on average. That’s because he was hitting drives higher and with 700rpm less spin. So of course, ball speed is important, but finding your optimal set-up is key.

Type of Driver

There are three main types of drivers, so make sure you are looking within the category that best reflects your specific game requirements:

Low-spin drivers: These are typically aimed at high-swing-speed players who generate a lot of spin and therefore want a low-spinning head to help create optimal numbers.

Standard/forgiving drivers: These drivers aim to offer a great combination of distance and forgiveness, and therefore tend to have the widest appeal.

Draw drivers: As the name suggests, these draw-biased models are designed to help you hit a draw off the tee, or at least significantly reduce the slice that so many amateur golfers struggle with.

Cyber Monday

The Monday after Thanksgiving (27th) is dubbed ‘Cyber Monday’ and presents a bonus opportunity to bag yourself a bargain if you missed out on Black Friday. Discounts typically continue and may even improve in some areas as retailers aim to keep the sales rolling. If you miss out on Black Friday, perhaps Cyber Monday will deliver for you!

Black Friday Golf Driver Deals: FAQs

When does Black Friday sale end?

Deals will continue to drop over the weekend, even though Black Friday has been and gone. This year Black Friday landed on Friday 24 November, but thankfully for us consumers the deals didn’t end then! Amazing offers are expected to end on Monday 27 November (Cyber Monday). So, be sure to shop these outstanding deals soon, before it’s too late…

How long does Black Friday last?

Officially, Black Friday is one day when retailers slash the price of their products allowing customers to make major savings they otherwise wouldn’t at any other time of the year. However, Black Friday is now much more of a weekend event, culminating on the following Monday – often referred to as Cyber Monday. This year the best deals will run between Friday 24 November and Monday 27 November.

How much does Black Friday discount?

Black Friday discounts vary significantly between retailers with some research suggesting the average savings across the sale period to be in the region of 50%. You can expect the most popular items to receive more modest discounts of 20-30%, and less popular items to receive heavier reductions of 70% plus. Items will likely be discounted further as the official day draws closer.

How do I choose a new driver?

When choosing a new driver, it is crucial to consider your specific game before filtering down the options most suited to you. Things to keep in mind are your swing speed, typical ball flight, level of forgiveness required, and obviously your budget. Most of the major manufacturers have multiple driver models designed with particular types of players in mind.

Is Black Friday a good time to buy golf clubs?

Black Friday sales undoubtedly present one of the best opportunities in the year for golfers to secure bargains on golf clubs from the biggest brands in the game. With new models of clubs being released in the new year, Black Friday sales are used by retailers to turnover surplus stock which is great news for golfers wanting to upgrade their bags with a new club, or 14!

Do golf retailers offer Black Friday deals?

Along with major online retailers such as Amazon, the majority of the biggest golf retailers will capitalize on the increased traffic around Black Friday and offer attractive discounts to customers ahead of the holiday season. PGA Tour Superstore, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Scottsdale Golf, and American Golf all offer Black Friday deals and are some of the most reputable places to purchase golf clubs.
