Sub 70 are one of a growing number of direct-to-consumer brands offering good quality golf equipment at considerably lower prices than the main manufacturers.
Sub 70 don’t sponsor any tour players, they don’t spend much on advertising, and by selling direct they cut out any middle-man retail costs that would eat into profits. They are able to pass the saving on to consumers in the shape of far lower prices, although it’s worth noting that even Sub 70 have increased prices a little recently, likely as a result of the increased costs being seen both in and out of golf.
They’re still far cheaper than most, though, and the Sub 70 659 CB’s performance earns it a spot among the best players’ irons.
Its 176-yard carry distance was just two yards back from the longest players’ iron in our test, although the caliber of golfers likely to be playing the Sub 70 659 CB are rarely sold solely on distance.
In all other key metrics, it was right around the test averages. That would make it a solid if not standout performer, but the fact it is on a par with irons that in some cases cost twice as much deserves some credit.
Looks-wise, the Sub 70 659 CB’s milled sole and back are very classy. At address, the model doesn’t look quite as refined as another direct-to-consumer iron, the Takomo 301 CB, but it doesn’t scream “budget iron” in any way.
The lofts are relatively strong (32° for a 7-iron) but still create a descent angle of 44.5° which will help hold greens.
The 659 CB replaces Sub 70’s 639 CB, and this time there’s additional weight added to the bottom of the club to lower the center of gravity and add forgiveness on off-center hits. The long irons (3, 4, and 5 irons) feature undercut technology, which creates a hotter face, better ball speeds, and more distance.
The heads are forged and milled from a billet of DT-4 soft steel, which provides good feel and workability.
The 659 CB provides improvements in ball flight, feel, and shot shaping over the 639 CB, and is a workhorse for good players looking for a responsive and technologically advanced forged iron. The 659 CB can also be combined with the Sub 70 659 MB or 659 TC to make a combination set, as they are loft and lie consistent throughout.
