North London course Brookmans Park golf course is undergoing a major renovation to modernise and enhance its classic layout.

The long-term project is being carried out by Swan Golf Design and the work to upgrade the original layout designed by J H Taylor, one of the Great Triumvirate of golf, is well underway.

Howard Swan and his team initially carried out a complete appraisal of the course to identify potential improvements and are now responsibly overseeing the changes that will bring the course up to date and make it more suited to modern equipment and technologies without losing any of its classic character.

The first phase of the development has been completed with the rebunkering of four holes. The remainder of the work will be carried out in phases, with the next stage planned for autumn 2009.

Brookmans Park was originally laid out in 1930 by Taylor, Open champion and noted golf course designer.

In addition to work on Brookmans Park Golf Club, Swan Golf Designs are also working extensively on courses throughout the UK designed by Braid and Vardon, most notably Goodwood, Kingswood and Bundoran.

Mike Brown, Chairman of Greens at Brookmans Park, is delighted with the improvements so far, saying: “The attention to detail is superb and visually the changes have definitely enhanced the golf course.

“We are very proud that Brookmans was designed by one of the great golf course architects and we wanted to be sure that any alterations required to bring the course up to date would be sympathetically carried out.”
