Scot bags top amateur title

A West Lothian golfer has been crowned national amateur champion after lifting the TaylorMade Amateur Championship in association with TGI Golf.

Stephen Hubbard, a member of Bathgate Golf Club, beat off competition from 19 other golfers in the grand final, played at Dalmahoy Hotel, Edinburgh.

The championship was contested over Dalmahoy’s East Course, and each team received amateur championship adidas shirt, TaylorMade R9 stand bag and TaylorMade TP umbrella – before heading out the latter was immediately put to good use as the weather closed in.

The TaylorMade-adidas Tour Truck was also on show at the driving range giving competitors the chance to see how the tour professionals are looked after, experience having clubs custom fitted by TMaG staff, and trial the company¹s new equipment on the range.

In order to qualify for the grand final Hubbard had to first win a qualifying competition held at Bathgate. He then had to wait to see if his score was good enough to see him into the top 20 of a national leaderboard.

Hubbard took the title by two shots, leaving team champion Andrew Watt in second place on +1.

It could have been far more comfortable for Hubbard had he not suffered a disastrous triple bogey on the last hole.

Fortunately for the 29-year-old his rivals could not capitalise on his slip, and he will now jet to TMaG’s European headquarters in Germany where he¹ll experience life as a Tour professional. He’ll be kitted out head to toe in adidas clothing, and be fully custom fit for a new set of TaylorMade clubs.

He said: “I cannot wait for my trip to Germany, I don¹t really know what to expect, but I’ve no doubt it¹ll be amazing. I really need a new set of clubs too, I¹ve been using the same ones I¹ve had for well over 10 years.”

This is Hubbard¹s first year back playing golf after taking a decade out from playing the sport.

“It¹s a great way to comeback, I¹ve won a few club competitions this year and to win this is the icing on the cake.”

The top pro-am team on the day was Whitecraig¹s Alistair Forrow and amateur Andrew Watt, who captured the team title.
