Big event set for top 2-FORE!-1 venue

It’s all change for the PGA North Region Championship as it switches from the North East to Yorkshire after attracting new funding.

International freight forwarders Thomson Davis will sponsor the 36-hole tournament, which will include a curtain-raising pro-am, at Marriott Hollins Hall Golf and Country Club on September 29-30.

Hollins Hall Golf Club, near Bradford, is a member of 2-FORE!-1 Golf and offers half-price golf at certain times during the week.

The course, set among 200 acres of moorland with stunning views across Baildon Moor and the Aire Valley, offers a fair test in an event that will determine the outcome of the region’s Order of Merit for the Mike Slater Memorial Trophy.

Peter Rishworth, the resort’s director of Golf, added: “Considerable preparation on and off the course has been carried out to ensure that the players enjoy their time here.

“Strategic bunkering combined with undulating fairways and greens are particular features offer a real challenge to professionals and amateurs.

“The championship course will once again provide a great test to players like former Ryder Cup star Gordon Brand who practices and trains here. The event is set to be a huge success.”

This is the 62nd staging of the tournament inaugurated in 1946 and boast many famous past winners including former Ryder Cup players John Fallon, Alex Caygill and Lionel Platts and more recently European Tour professionals Andrew Murray, Phil Archer and Paul Eales.

Meanwhile, Bridlington Links assistant Alex Belt has confirmed he will defend his title and will clearly be the man to beat again following his victory in the Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh Open Young PGA Professional Championship at Bull Bay.

Former European Tour professional Neil Cheetham, attached to Dore and Totley, leads the Order of Merit from a group of eight players all within striking distance.
